Filmmaker Nance Ackerman never sounds a false note, and with FOUR FEET UP she is ringing more clearly than ever. Her latest film is in many ways a response to this country’s promise to eliminate child poverty. So how is it that eight-year-old Isaiah is smart and so full of potential and yet part of a family that can barely make ends meet? With sheer bravado and sensitivity, Ackerman spent two years with Isaiah and his family, involving them fully in this portrait of their struggle to cope in a country that renders them invisible. Deliberately grounded in reality, not sentimentality, this doc gives a very human face to social dysfunction, and prompts us to reflect not only on why change hasn’t yet happened but what we can do to ensure it.
