Announcing the 2012 RBC MJAward winner!

Jackie Hynes is a 30-year-old filmmaker from St. John’s. She has worked on over 20 film projects as a writer, actor, producer, and mentor. She’s also written and directed two of her own short films: One Of Us Cannot Be Right and Cardboard Junction, for which she won the Nickel Film Festival’s Emerging Filmmaker Award in 2011.

She is the third winner of the RBC MJAward, administered by the St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival, which celebrates the life of St. John’s filmmaker Michelle Jackson, who passed away suddenly in 2008.

Hynes’ winning script is a dark comedic thriller called Two Passengers, about a young girl who runs away from home to the big city and, with the unintended assistance of a creepy old woman and a creepier young girl, winds up finding her way home again. The script was chosen by this year’s jury, consisting of the CBC’s Denise Wilson, filmmaker Mary Lewis, and last year’s RBC MJAward winner Ruth Lawrence.

The RBC MJ Award will give Hynes approximately $40,000 in cash and services to make this film. Two Passengers will premiere at the 24th Annual St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival in October 2013. The award is made possible with the help of the following supporters:

• RBC Foundation • CBC • PS Atlantic • Deluxe Toronto • Stewart McKelvey • Atlantic Studios Cooperative • Newfoundland and Labrador Film Development Corporation • Newfoundland Independent Filmmakers Cooperative • Kodak Canada Inc. • Don Sinclair and Travelers Canada • Atlantic Film Festival
