Tamara Segura González wins the 4th annual RBC Michelle Jackson Emerging Filmmaker Award
September 9th, 2013, St. John’s - For Tamara Segura, it was not insignificant that her one-year anniversary in Newfoundland fell in the same month as the RBC Michelle Jackson Emerging Filmmaker Award deadline.
Segura came from Cuba to Canada in 2010 after graduating from a prestigious film school and winning international awards for her films. But she soon had to apply for political asylum and, unable to access funding from either Cuba or Canada, she was cut off from filmmaking.
So she waited, spending a year in St. John’s. That year made her eligible to apply for the RBC Michelle Jackson Emerging Filmmaker Award. The deadline to apply for the award, and Segura’s one-year anniversary in Newfoundland, were both in July 2013.
Segura’s winning script, “Before The War,” is an intimate, nuanced and heartfelt story about a family crumbling after its father returns from a war.
As the winner of the 2013 RBC Michelle Jackson Emerging Filmmaker Award, Segura will receive over $10,000 in cash and services to complete her short film.
“Before The War” will screen at the 25th annual St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival during the Closing Night Gala.
The RBC Michelle Jackson Emerging Filmmaker Award is administered by the St. John’s International Women’s Film festival in memory of student mentor, friend, and filmmaker Michelle Jackson, who passed away suddenly in 2008. The award is made possible with the support of the RBC Foundation, CBC Newfoundland and Labrador, the Newfoundland and Labrador Film Development Corporation, Stewart McKelvey, Atlantic Studios Cooperative, Newfoundland Independent Filmmakers Cooperative, Casting by Maggie, and E. Klinck Research.
