The 2014 RBC Michelle Jackson Emerging Filmmaker Award is now open for submissions
June 18, 2014, ST. JOHN’S — The RBC Michelle Jackson Emerging Filmmaker Award is entering its fifth year. Having played a key role in launching the careers of four female filmmakers from Newfoundland and Labrador, the RBC Michelle Jackson Emerging Filmmaker Award is back and open for submissions.
Emerging female directors residing in Newfoundland and Labrador who have not yet directed a feature film are invited to apply. The deadline for submissions is July 21st, 2014.
Founded in honour of St. John’s filmmaker and student mentor Michelle Jackson and administered by the St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival, the peer-juried award provides services and cash towards the creation of a six-minute film, which will premiere at the 26th annual St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival.
The four previous recipients have had great success since winning the RBC Michelle Jackson Emerging Filmmaker Award. Allison White, who won the inaugural award in 2010, just completed her first feature film, which was awarded funding through the Telefilm Canada’s national Micro-Budget Program. Ruth Lawrence, winner of the 2011 award, most recently directed the film “Talus & Scree,” which is currently competing in the CBC Short Film Face Off. Winner of the 2012 award, Jackie Hynes, screened her film “The Passenger” at the 2013 Atlantic Film Festival.
The 2013 RBC Michelle Jackson Emerging Filmmaker Award winner, Tamara Segura, is in post-production on her winning film “Before The War.” “Before The War” will premiere at the Closing Night Gala of the 25th annual St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival at the Arts and Culture Centre on October 18th, 2014.
This year’s award is made possible with the support of the RBC Foundation, the Newfoundland and Labrador Film Development Corporation, Atlantic Studios Cooperative, the Newfoundland Independent Filmmakers Cooperative, and Casting by Maggie.
