The RBC Michelle Jackson Emerging Filmmaker Award is now open for 2017 applications!

If you're an emerging woman filmmaker living in Newfoundland, you'll want to have a look at what this award has to offer.

The RBC Michelle Jackson Emerging Filmmaker Award (RBC MJAward) was founded in honour of St. John’s filmmaker and student mentor Michelle Jackson, who passed away suddenly in 2008. This annual peer-juried award is open to emerging female directors who reside in Newfoundland and Labrador and who have not yet directed a feature film. Only directors may apply. The award provides services and cash towards the creation of a six-minute film.

The winner of the 2017 RBC MJAward will receive over $26,000 in cash and in-kind services towards the making of their short film, along with mentorship.

Last year’s winner, Emily Bridger, recently wrapped up the filming of her winning script Waste It -- the poignant story of a woman named Karen who attempts to grapple with the fleeting nature of romance through filmmaking, only to run into conflict with her surrounding cast and crew.

Bridger worked alongside director mentor Lindsay MacKay and a full crew of talented folks over the course of two days to finish her film. You'll see her work at the Closing Night Gala of the 28th annual St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival.

Should you be the lucky recipient of the 2017 RBC MJAward, you'll have your premiere at our 29th annual Festival!

Ruth Lawrence and Tamara Segura, both former winners of the RBC Michelle Jackson Emerging Filmmaker Award, sat down with us a few years back before they began production on Before The War. In this video, these two are chatting about the award, their projects, and working together in St. John's!

Interested in applying? Check out everything you need to know on our RBC MJ Award page. And if you have any questions, please contact us. Deadline to apply is July 17, 2017 at 5:00pm by dropping off your application to the SJIWFF office or having them postmarked by this date.
