travel tips

  • Most people choose to fly into St. John’s International Airport (YYT), which is only a 15-minute drive to Downtown. Check with us about our airline discounts.

  • If you’re travelling overland, you’ll want to book a spot on the Marine Atlantic ferry.

  • Our weather can be unpredictable, and there are limited flights to/from St. John's, so we recommend playing it safe and arriving at least a day before (or at minimum early morning the day of) your film screening or the event you wish to attend!

  • Some people only need their valid passport to enter Canada, but others may need a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to travel to Canada. Find out what you need here

  • October is usually a pleasant time for visiting St. John’s, but the weather can be unpredictable. It’s best to prepare for colder temperatures and occasional heavy rains. Be sure to bring layers and a waterproof jacket.

  • Don't forget to adjust your clocks and check your smartphones! We have our own timezone – Newfoundland Standard Time

  • Metrobus is the city’s only mode of public transit. Individual fare is $2.50 (you’ll need to ask for a transfer slip if transferring). Generally, though, you won’t need to use the bus if you stay downtown.

There are also several cab companies if you'd rather pay for a taxi than walk up the hills. Be sure to ask for an accessible cab or a booster/car seat if required.

You can also book a rental car, but it’s advised to make a reservation far in advance of your arrival date. A rental car is great for getting out and exploring nearby highlights, like Cape Spear or Petty Harbour. If you want advice on extended itineraries, please reach out.

With its prime downtown location overlooking the harbour and a spectacular view of The Narrows and Signal Hill, the Alt is at the heart of this year’s events. Maximize your Festival experience and enjoy St. John’s at its finest by staying here, next to the ocean.

Guests can avail themselves of generous nightly room discount rates at the Alt during our Festival. Rooms are limited, so we encourage you to book early.
