about the festival

a community-building festival like no other

St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival hosts an annual five-day Festival every October. Join us for a festival like no other and experience the best new cinema worldwide in a cultural celebration that puts artists and community at the forefront.

Our October Festival welcomes delegates from across Canada and internationally. It is a catalyst for advancing the province's film industry and one of the few opportunities for local audiences to see contemporary independent cinema and to meet the filmmakers behind the work. Hosting one of Atlantic Canada's largest gatherings of film professionals, it fuels growth, fosters innovation, and generates business opportunities and artistic development.

more than just films

SJIWFF is more than just films. It invites everyone to celebrate and experience Newfoundland and Labrador's vibrant culture and world-class artistry, explore our awe-inspiring landscape, and meet the naturally creative and generous people who make St. John's their home. Simply put by everyone who attends - it's a magical and profoundly impactful experience that cannot exist anywhere else.

sjiwff34

In October 2023, our 34th annual Festival captivated audiences with a genre-spanning array of films. SJIWFF34 offered a space to share and connect with artists and audiences alike. The backdrop of the city of St. John's is truly reflective of the SJIWFF experience: energetic, colourful, fresh, and inspiring. Festival Guest

“I’ve been to many film festivals, and a lot of times you’re just competing for air. Here, people are very generous. They listen and they care about each other. They freely share what they’ve learned; they’re not holding on to it, they’re giving it away.”

Festival Guest

“You realize how essential being in the same room and sharing is to the betterment of your work and your quality of life—the beautiful part of sharing is that you feel a part of something. It’s a wonderful thing.”
